[pullquote quote=”I’m looking forward to rehearsing these songs with my band.” credit=”Leonard Cohen, speaking about ‘Old Ideas'”]If 2012 truly brings about the end of the world, fans of [lastfm]Leonard Cohen[/lastfm] will line up at the pearly gates with wide smiles, having just spent their last year on earth devouring Cohen’s Old Ideas.

A moody masterpiece, the album at once signals Cohen’s return to recording and his return to the road. Some songs are new, some “very old,” says Cohen. The recordings are spare and unadorned, consisting mainly of vocals and guitar. And although the songs’ topics range from personal ruminations to thoughts on Hurricane Katrina, their stark sound glues the tracks together, making Old Ideas the very model of what an album should be.

Much of the speculation that surrounds [lastfm]Leonard Cohen[/lastfm] these days centers on the question of whether or not he will tour again. At a listening party of Old Ideas in New York recently, Cohen indicated he was eager to get back out on the road. “I’m looking forward to rehearsing these songs with my band,” said the singer, during a discussion about the new record. With such spare production and so few musicians playing on the album, it’s anyone’s guess what form these songs will take in Cohen’s live show once a full band is introduced.
